How to Look Genuinely Stylish as a SAHM

If you follow me on Instagram (and if you don’t you can do so here) then its no secret that I like to look pulled together and my idea of cute most days. Even on those days that I don’t have much planned, I like to get dressed; it makes me feel better about myself and I usually get more accomplished as compared to those days when I stay in sweats. Being a mom or sahm doesn’t mean that you have to look frumpy, plain or completely covered up, so here are my closet staples that I find myself wearing and mixing and matching regularly. They are my pieces that make getting dressed in a hurry much easier without losing my style on those crazy mornings.

  1. A great denim jacket

If you don’t already own one you seriously need to! Alright picture this, you are running behind and decide to throw on your favorite dress because hello its one piece of clothing and it doesn’t get much easier!? Grab that denim jacket and throw it on top I promise that you will automatically look like you styled your entire look. Denim jackets go great with skirts, printed pants, colored denim, pretty much anything really!

A great fitting pair of skinny/straight jeans

I personally love my pair from LOFT because they have stretch in them so they are skinny jeans but they are super comfy! Skinny jeans are my favorites over straights for a couple of reasons. One they can be styled so many different ways. Skinnies can be tucked into boots, cuffed to be crops, or worn as is. When I say skinny I don’t mean the kind that the tweens are wearing where they are suctioned to your ankles. Just fitted all the way down and through the knee with minimal bunching. These will look instantly stylish even with a plain V-neck Tee.

A striped T

This is seriously one of my obsessions! I have long sleeve ones, tank tops and a V neck short sleeve just to name a few. They work with jeans and prints and elevate all of your looks with literally no effort. Here are just a few style ideas:

A cute pair of sneakers

I usually get mine from Target because they get fun colors and prints every year plus they are cute and simple in design. I wear mine with dresses, skirts, shorts, jeans pretty much everything. They are comfy to walk in but look way cuter than a clunky running shoe.

Patterned Pants

Okay don’t let this one scare you away! Patterned pants are just as easy to wear as jeans but they make you look like a total style queen! No one will ever know that you didn’t spend all morning putting together your outfit. A chambray shirt is a no fail win with these but other options are a white tee (duh), or pretty much any color tee that you can pull out of the pant. I personally love the pixie pant from old navy.

Chambray Button Up

I just mentioned that this goes great with printed pants but wait there’s more! A chambray shirt will absolutely go with everything in your closet. You can wear it open as a light layering piece with dresses, tanks, shirts. Tuck it into a skirt or front tuck it into a maxi. Wear it tied over a dress and if you’re daring rock the Texas Tuxedo with denim on denim. If your stuck styling anything in your closet pair with chambray. Poof! Problem solved.

Thick(ish) leggings

Just because you think of yourself as a stylish mom doesn’t mean you cant’t rock the ever wonderful pair of leggings! I just recommend you stay away from the ones that are so thin that you can see your bum or worse yet the outline of your underwear! Find a pair in a little thicker material that are fitted without being overly tight. I wear mine ALL the time in the Fall and Winter. I usually tuck a pair of tall boots into them and wear a long sweater; comfy yet stylish.

Tall Boots

I practically live in these for all of Fall and Winter. Mine are a dark brown leather pair I scored on sale at Nordstrom over 3 years ago but I just adore them! I wear them with everything, leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts, with tights. They match any outfit and are always easy pull on plus they will keep you warm!

A dress that you love and feel great in

This should be a dress that no matter what you know you look good in and better yet your comfortable. I love dresses because it’s a lot less thought than a bottom and top but it almost always looks super pulled together and cute. Bonus if your dress transitions well through the seasons.

A Midi length skirt

This length skirt is absolutely the perfect skirt for a mom! You can bend down to pick up toddlers, sit on the floor easily with infants, and still look completely on trend. All three of these functions in one article of clothing is very rare so I suggest you run out and grab yourself one or two or ten (don’t worry no judgement here).

A maxi skirt or dress (better yet both!)

Is it super hot outside? Can you not remember the last time you shaved your legs? Screaming child with no chance of being able to shave them today? Wear a maxi skirt or dress. Ta-Dah! You instantly look stylish, you’re cool (hello light breeze) plus no one can see your hairy legs. Make sure your dress or skirt is somewhat fitted in all of your right places to avoid looking frumpy; a baggy floor length garment does have the chance of making you look incredibly matronly. But as long as it is fitted in one area you are golden my friends!

  1. A utility jacket

Check out my instagram and you will clearly see my obsession with my utility jacket. Mine is an olive green and has a hood so it goes with every. single. thing in my closet. It is a medium weight jacket and I throw it on over everything from jeans and a T to dresses or skirts. It will pull an outift together even if its just leggings and a v-neck (I am wearing that as I speak and this is my jacket for the day).

A neutral pair of flat sandals

When the temperatures heat up sandals are a must! I personally love a pair with a strap that goes around your heel it will help keep them on when you are chasing your toddler across the playground *cheesy smile*. Get yourself one super cute pair in a neutral color like cognac or a soft metallic and you will have cute footwear with literally no thought or effort.

A white V-neck Tee

I mean is this even a question? Of course you need one great white V-neck tee. It will go with everything in your closet. Plus wear your great jeans and cute sandals and you will look classic and chic instantly.

A cardigan in your favorite color

I personally have a coral long sleeve cardigan which I absolutely love! I wear it constantly year round but especially in the spring. It is so easy to just throw on and head out the door. The weight is perfect so I’m not sweating to death or freezing my buns off depending on where I’m at. Because it’s in a color I love it works with most of my wardrobe.

What are some of your style essentials?

Love Always,

Sam

  2. Really neat article. And you are spot on too. Some of your ideas are what I do too. Sneakers with fun laces. Some skirts that I wear all the time!
Nice pair of earrings that go with many clothes.
